Travel Advisory for Mexico Extended
July 27, 2005

"On July 27, 2005 the US State Department extended the travel advisory issued in January for another 90 days. Citing criminal activity along the border region, the statement contained much of the same wording from the previous statement. This is the third consecutive quarterly travel warning for northern Mexico."

"There were 357 murders in Tijuana last year," says Carlo Castillo, the state prosecutor's spokesman. "That's up from 318 in 1997.

The numbers are staggering when compared to the city of San Diego's 42 murders. San Diego's population is roughly equivalent to Tijuana's 1.2 million. Tijuana's murder rate is more like that of L.A.'s (414), which has four times Tijuana's population.

"According to government reports, there were 800 murders in Tijuana in 1996 and of those 600 were characterised by a "profusion" of violence. 75 percent of Tijuana's murders were violent executions apparently between gangs of drug traffickers."
